The Big 500
Inspired by the concept of the Big Five, a familiar expression across African countries used to market and shape safari experiences, this series was born of a question, is there a Canadian corollary?
The Big 500 is a beginning: a sweeping tribute to five hundred Canadian animals – from the iconic to the overlooked, spanning land, sea and sky. Each creature is presented against a bold, saturated background, rendered in a graphic stylized form. Often they burst beyond their frames, a visual reminder of the lives that are always lived outside of (and in conjunction with) representation.
I invite you to enjoy this celebration of Canada’s extraordinary animal diaspora, and to consider the animal each image represents. What stories have you heard about the animal? How is what you know shaped by what you have read heard or seen?
