The Digital Lion Roars

I expected the sound of lions asserting their territorial boundaries to be like the roar of the MGM lion. That’s why I missed it— too many times to count, while in the bush film-making.

This series is comprised of sound recordings of lion, converted into waveforms using a proprietary algorithm.

The first waveform is that of the familiar 2008 MGM film opener. Each subsequent waveform is an actual recording of three lions housed at Drakenstein Lion Park, and which were used in the most recent iteration of the MGM lion roar. This digital sound series is a simple comparative analysis of waveforms that shows the difference between a socially constructed lion roar [MGM Lion Roars] and unprocessed lion roars.  I call the relationship between the two a “sonic assumption” in nature representation.
